Manuscript Submission Checklist

  • Refer to ACS Style Guide http://pubs.acs.org/isbn/9780841239999
  • Make sure agency acknowledgment formatted correctly
  • Compile figures and tables correctly (make sure that text references to figures and tables actually point to the correct figure or table)
  • Organize references properly
  • Check that there are no duplicate references
  • Position TOC Graphic correctly (at end of manuscript for ACS)
  • Use spell check; add new technical words to Microsoft Word’s dictionary (correctly spelled, of course)
  • Use grammar check in Microsoft word or grammarly.com
  • Use writing level check: let Microsoft Word tell you the grade level of the writing (make sure it’s on the higher end of the spectrum)
  • Get the right balance of passive voice and active voice: here's a good link for that.
  • Pay attention to these issues:
    • Write “use” rather than “utilize” (use the simpler word)
    • Write "many" rather than "numerous" (use the simpler word)
    • Eliminate needless adverbs! (search for all occurrences of "ly_" and be sure that adverb helps)
    • Avoid the word “unique” (almost nothing is)
    • Avoid “however” (it’s often over-used as a transition when a new sentence will do the trick)
